Dear Indian Railways,

Indian Railways: A Love Letter from a Rail Enthusiast on Independence Day

Dear Indian Railways,

As India celebrates its 78th Independence Day, I find myself reflecting on a relationship that has shaped my life in ways words can hardly capture. Indian Railways isn’t just a mode of transport for me; it’s a lifelong passion, a deep-rooted love that has only grown stronger over the years. Every whistle, every clickety-clack of the tracks, and every distant hum of a train approaching stirs something within me—a nostalgic reverie of journeys past and the promise of adventures yet to come.

A Journey Back in Time

My affair with the railways began as a child, standing on the platform, holding my father's hand, and waiting with bated breath for the train to arrive. The sight of that massive steel giant rolling into the station, the sound of the brakes screeching, and the rush of wind as it passed—these moments were nothing short of magical. I remember peering out of the window, watching the landscape whizz by, feeling the world shrink as the train carried me across cities, states, and stories.

There’s something profoundly Indian about the railway journey. It’s in the simple joy of sharing a compartment with strangers who become friends, in the rhythm of the train that seems to sync with the heartbeat of the nation, and in the iconic IRCTC chai that tastes better than any other tea in the world. For me, the train wasn’t just a means to get somewhere; it was the journey itself that mattered.

The Pride of Progress

As I’ve grown, so too has Indian Railways, and watching this evolution has been nothing short of exhilarating. Take the Vande Bharat Express, for instance. Seeing this sleek, modern train with its aerodynamic design and state-of-the-art features is a proud moment for any rail enthusiast. This is India stepping confidently into the future, and I’m thrilled to witness it.

The move towards 100% electrification, the dedicated freight corridors, and the push for greener, more sustainable railways are all achievements that fill me with

immense pride. Indian Railways isn’t just keeping up with the times; it’s leading the charge, showing the world what we’re capable of.

And yet, despite all the progress, Indian Railways has managed to retain its soul. The charm of the old stations, the unique experience of crossing a bridge with the river flowing beneath, the simple pleasure of watching the sun set behind distant hills from a moving train—these timeless moments remain untouched, even as the railways modernize.

A Nostalgic Heart

But for all the advancements, it’s the nostalgia that keeps me coming back. There’s a special place in my heart for the diesel engines that once roared across the country, chugging powerfully as they pulled long trains through the vast and varied landscape. I can still feel the excitement of waiting at the crossing, hoping to catch a glimpse of one of those magnificent machines.

I miss the days when journeys were long, not because of delays but because that’s just how far the destination was. There was time to savor every moment—the conversations with fellow travelers, the games of cards, the shared meals, and the stories that unfolded as the miles rolled by. Each journey felt like an adventure, with its own set of memories, unique and irreplaceable.

The Future Beckons

As we celebrate Independence Day this year, I can’t help but look forward to what lies ahead. The prospect of bullet trains, further innovations in safety and comfort, and the continued commitment to sustainability are all incredibly exciting. But as a rail enthusiast, my hope is that Indian Railways never loses that special something—that magic that makes every journey a story worth telling.

Indian Railways is more than just tracks and trains; it’s a living, breathing entity that has grown with the nation. It’s a symbol of our unity in diversity, a testament to our shared history, and a promise of the journey still to come.

So here’s to Indian Railways, on this Independence Day and every day. May it continue to evolve, to inspire, and to bring joy to every heart that, like mine, beats a little faster at the sound of a distant train whistle.

Jai Hind!
