### A Significant Step Towards Enhancing Rail Connectivity Between the National Capital and Kashmir Valley
In a significant step towards enhancing rail connectivity between the national capital and the Kashmir Valley (Kashmir Railways), Indian Railways has planned to introduce a new daily Rajdhani Express service and a new bi-weekly train service between Kanyakumari (CAPE) and Srinagar. This strategic decision follows the opening of the SVDK-Reasi section, which will directly connect Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Katra (SVDK) with the valley within the next three months.
According to recent discussions with the Railway Board, Northern Railway (NR) is set to receive four modified LHB rakes specifically for operations in the valley. The initial plan included launching the bi-weekly service between Kanyakumari and Srinagar and extending the NDLS-JAT Rajdhani Express (train numbers 12425/12426) to Srinagar for three days a week.
However, detailed analysis revealed that this plan would not make optimal use of the modified rakes, leading to extended periods of idleness in New Delhi (NDLS) and Srinagar, as outlined below:
Idle Time in Srinagar:
- Wednesday-Saturday: 73 hours 50 minutes
- Tuesday-Wednesday: 25 hours 20 minutes
- Sunday-Tuesday: 54 hours
Idle Time in NDLS:
- 13 hours 45 minutes (3 days a week)
Additionally, the modified rake link for train numbers 12423/12424 (daily) and 12425/12426 (four days a week) also showed significant idle periods in NDLS and Jammu Tawi (JAT):
Idle Time in NDLS:
- Monday-Wednesday: 53 hours 50 minutes
- Wednesday-Saturday: 77 hours 50 minutes
- Saturday-Monday: 53 hours 50 minutes
Idle Time in JAT:
- One instance: 160 hours 25 minutes

Three instances: 16 hours 25 minutes
To address these limitations and ensure optimal use of the modified rolling stock, Indian Railways has proposed running the NDLS-JAT Rajdhani Express (train numbers 12425/12426) daily into the valley, adding a fifth modified rake to the link. This adjustment will not only provide a daily Rajdhani Express service between New Delhi and Srinagar but also reduce idle times at terminals. The revised situation is as follows:
Idle Time in NDLS:
- 13 hours 45 minutes (daily)
Idle Time in Srinagar:
- 6 hours (daily)
The new bi-weekly service between Kanyakumari (CAPE) and Srinagar will be operated with three modified LHB rakes, with the following idle times in Srinagar:
Idle Time in Srinagar:
- Wednesday-Saturday: 73 hours 50 minutes
- Saturday-Wednesday: 97 hours 50 minutes
Additionally, the NDLS-DBRT Rajdhani Express (train numbers 12423/12424) will be separated from the NDLS-JAT Rajdhani Express and operated with five rakes instead of six, resulting in 29 hours 50 minutes of idle time daily in NDLS.
This initiative by Indian Railways will significantly enhance rail connectivity for the Kashmir Valley, offering daily Rajdhani Express services and better travel options from other parts of the country to the valley. The opening of the SVDK-Reasi section will play a crucial role in this connectivity, paving the way for new avenues of travel and economic growth in the region.
